A Broken Heart

“If through a broken heart God can bring His purposes to pass in the world, then thank Him for breaking your heart.”

Oswald chambers

Have you ever had your heart broken? Perhaps someone you love has let you down, walked out on you or a friend betrayed you? Maybe your heart is breaking because the person you love is no longer here.

I remember the first time my heart was broken, it was many many years ago. I know now who my first love truly is and he is Jesus, however at that time this was true love. My 14 year old heart was broken and I remember I cried for 3 days solid, I thought the pain would never end. However there is an old saying that I like and its “what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger”. Well it did make me stronger at least until the next time my heart was broken!!

You may not have had your heart broken however I am sure that at some point you have experienced disappointment. You may not have experienced rejection however I am sure at some point someone will have said something that wasn’t nice. We live in a world full of brokenness and it’s hard to escape the hardship of relationships at times.

However how can we overcome the breakdown in a relationship and do we really need to suffer a broken heart to truly appreciate God’s love and purpose for us?

I said my heart felt stronger until it was broken again and sadly I have experienced the pain of disappointment several times in my life. However through each experience I have discovered the love God has for me in an ever deeper and intimate way. Not only that, I have truly understood the sacrifice that he made for me to demonstrate just how much he loves me. For you see God’s heart breaks. It breaks when he looks at the suffering in the world, it breaks when he sees us walk away from his plans for us and it breaks when we reject him. He knows the pain of a broken heart which is why he truly understands our brokenness. The psalmist writes he is close to the broken hearted and he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.Psalm34v18.

Are you suffering with a broken heart today? The Father loves you and wants to comfort you as only he can. Allow his love to meet you in your disappointment today. Allow him to bandage your wounds and bring you a deeper realisation of his love for you.
