W2W 12 Days of Christmas Day 10
W2W Blog – Inspiring women to fall in love with Jesus
On the 10th day of Christmas my First Love gave to me:
A diamond forever
In 1953 the actress Marilyn Monroe performed the hit song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” in the hit film Gentleman Prefer Blondes. What is it about diamonds that are so captivating and why is it still top of a woman’s Christmas wish list? It may have something to do with their sparkle and beauty, or the fact that they are rare and last forever. They are also known for their association with strength, wealth and of course, romance! The Greeks believed that the fire in the diamond reflected the constant flame of love.
However are they as rare as they are made out to be? You see as I walked through the shops, I noticed one jewellery shop after another, all selling similar cuts and shapes of diamond. The truth is they don’t last forever as they can shatter, discolour and can get lost. This brings me to the magnificent sparkler that we read of in today’s instalment of the Christmas story. The star of Bethlehem shone so bright that it led the Magi to the place where the baby lay. Over the years many have debated this miraculous sighting. Many theories abound, including comets, super novas, the conjunctions of planets or the appearance of an angel.
However scripture tells us in the book of Matthew 2 v 1-12, that the star the wise men had seen in the East went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where Jesus lay. As a follower of Christ, I like to think of the star in a similar way to how the Greeks perceived diamonds – as a light that led the way to the constant flame of love – Jesus. The appearance of bright light is also used throughout scripture to symbolise the very presence of God. On that first Christmas night the Glory of God was shining all around, it led the way and brought peace. However the same can be said of God today. He is all around us. Jesus is the light of the world and he leads the way forward to peace for us.
So if you are looking for something sparkly this year that is rare, will last forever, never break and will never go missing, then the light of the world is wrapped up for you. Once you have opened it, wear it on your heart, for “Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever”. (Daniel 12v3). So walk in the light and shine bright like a diamond.
